Sapporo City, Hill of the Buddha & Jozankei Onsen

Morning: shrine, chocolate park, seafood

Hokkaido Shrine opens the day with thirty minutes. It sits inside Maruyama Park in a stand of old trees, founded in 1869 to enshrine the kami of Hokkaido's development, and in early May it is where Sapporo goes for cherry blossom, the north island's blossom arrives six weeks after Tokyo's, which catches out visitors who think they have missed it.

Shiroi Koibito Park gets fifty minutes. It is the theme park attached to the Shiroi Koibito biscuit factory: English-garden grounds, a clock tower with an hourly performance, red-brick buildings. Note what the listing excludes, the paid attractions inside the buildings are not covered, so the chocolate-making workshop and the factory route are yours to pay for or skip.

Then 70 minutes at the Sapporo Central Wholesale Market, which is the intended lunch. This is the outer market beside the wholesale complex: crab, sea urchin, scallops, salmon roe, and the kaisendon rice bowls that are the reason to spend the money. Gloria from the United States, in June 2026, listed the day's stops and called it "well worth the money... if you'd like to fit in as much sightseeing as possible in one day."

Afternoon: beer, then a Tadao Ando hill

The Sapporo Beer Museum gets forty minutes. It is the only beer museum in Japan, housed in an 1890 brick sugar factory that became the brewery, and it tells the story of a beer brand that started in 1876 as a government pioneering project. Entry to the museum's self-guided route is free; the tasting flight is not, and forty minutes is enough for one of them, not both.

The Hill of the Buddha is the stop most people book this tour for. Tadao Ando's design buries a 13.5-metre stone Buddha up to its head inside an artificial hill at Makomanai Takino Cemetery, so that from outside you see only the crown; you walk a 40-metre concrete tunnel and emerge at its feet, under an open oculus of sky. In summer 150,000 lavender plants cover the hill.

Fifty minutes is allocated, and the 1,000-yen admission is not included, cash, in 1,000-yen notes. Opening hours are 9:00 to 16:00 April to October and 10:00 to 15:00 November to March.

Jozankei Onsen to finish

Ninety minutes at Jozankei, the hot-spring valley an hour west of the city in the Shikotsu-Toya National Park, where the Toyohira River runs through a gorge lined with ryokan. The stop is free time rather than a booked bath: the free public foot baths and the hand-bath by the river are what most people use, and Gloria's review mentions "a free foot bath" as part of the day.

In October the gorge is one of the better autumn colour spots near Sapporo; in winter it is snowed in and steaming. If you want a full onsen bath rather than a foot soak, several ryokan sell day-use entry, but 90 minutes including a walk to the river is tight for that.

The bus then runs back to the TV Tower and the Tokyu REI Hotel.

Take it for the awkward stops

Nothing on this itinerary is far, but three of the six are genuinely annoying without a car. The Hill of the Buddha is at a cemetery in the southern hills, reached by a bus from Makomanai station that runs infrequently. Jozankei is an hour out by highway bus. Shiroi Koibito Park is a subway ride plus a walk. Doing all three in one day on public transport is possible and unpleasant.

Strung together with pickup included, they become a comfortable day with more time on foot, about five hours and twenty minutes out of the vehicle, the most in this catalog, and almost no expressway. That is also why this is a good first or last day: it is the least tiring tour here, and it does not put you two hours from your hotel.

Lee from Malaysia, in June 2026, noted that with good weather "we are able to cover all destinations as per schedule", worth reading as the caveat it is.

Skip it if you want landscape, or if you resent paying twice

This is a city day. There is no volcano, no flower field and no coastline; the scenery is a park, a brewery and a hot-spring gorge. If you have three days, this should not be the first one you book, the volcano circuit and the flower day show you things you cannot see anywhere else.

And count the extras honestly. The fare buys the bus and the guide. On top: 1,000 yen for the Buddha, whatever your seafood bowl costs at the market, the beer tasting if you want it, and anything paid inside Shiroi Koibito Park. A $46.59 tour can comfortably become a $70 day.

The listing also has a curious exclusion, not suitable for people over 95, which reads as a typo for a lower limit elsewhere in the catalog, but is what it says.

Cash, and the right notes

The only what-to-bring item on the listing is cash, and it is the right one. The Hill of the Buddha takes 1,000-yen notes only for cash payment, not coins, not a 10,000-yen bill you expect change from. The market stalls are cash-first. The Beer Museum tasting counter takes cards but the queue moves faster with cash.

Draw 10,000 yen before the tour and you will not think about it again.

Seasons change what you get

Summer is when the Buddha's hill is under lavender and Jozankei is green. Early May is cherry blossom at Hokkaido Shrine, which is the one time this tour beats the landscape tours outright. October turns the Jozankei gorge.

Winter still runs, but the Buddha closes at 15:00 from November and the hill is under snow rather than flowers, which is a colder and starker version of the same architecture, some people prefer it.

Timing is elastic, in both directions

The operator states that stop durations may be shortened or extended for road conditions, and that because of facility hours and holidays the schedule may be adjusted, including moving to the next attraction early or ending the tour early.

On a six-stop day that is a real variable. It is another argument for treating this as the relaxed day in your week rather than the one you build an evening reservation around.
